Rough ideas on wetting
نویسنده
چکیده
After a brief presentation of the classical laws of wetting, we review di(erent phenomenological descriptions of rough wetting, i.e., show how these classical laws must be modi*ed on rough solids. This introduces the questions of hemi-wicking (can a *lm propagate inside the texture of a solid ?), rough *lms (is it possible for a liquid *lm to follow the roughness of a solid ?) and super-hydrophobicity (how can a solid be designed to become water repellent ?). c © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Wetting theory for small droplets on textured solid surfaces
Conventional wetting theories on rough surfaces with Wenzel, Cassie-Baxter, and Penetrate modes suggest the possibility of tuning the contact angle by adjusting the surface texture. Despite decades of intensive study, there are still many experimental results that are not well understood because conventional wetting theory, which assumes an infinite droplet size, has been used to explain measur...
متن کاملCassie-Wenzel wetting transition in vibrating drops deposited on rough surfaces: is the dynamic Cassie-Wenzel wetting transition a 2D or 1D affair?
The transition between the Cassie and Wenzel wetting regimes has been observed under vertical vibration of a water drop placed on a rough micrometrically scaled polymer pattern. The transition takes place under the constant force per unit length of the triple contact line, not under constant pressure. A study of the vibrating drop deposited on the rough surface supplied valuable information con...
متن کاملAnalysis for Wetting on Rough Surfaces by a Three-dimensional Phase Field Model∗
In this paper, we consider the derivation of the modified Wenzel’s and Cassie’s equations for wetting phenomena on rough surfaces from a three-dimensional phase field model. We derive an effective boundary condition by asymptotic two-scale homogenization technique when the size of the roughness is small. The modified Wenzel’s and Cassie’s equations for the apparent contact angles on the rough s...
متن کاملWetting behavior of liquid He on rough Cs films: Pinning, memory effect, and micropuddles
The liquid He-cesium system is a nearly ideal one for studying wetting phenomena. However, it can show nonideal behavior such as an extreme wetting hysteresis and a memory of being in contact with liquid He. We believe that this is caused by the roughness of the Cs surface. We review the wetting characteristics of Cs surfaces produced by various methods, and we qualitatively classify Cs surface...
متن کاملWetting failure of hydrophilic surfaces promoted by surface roughness
Wetting failure is of vital importance to many physical phenomena, such as industrial coating and drop emission. Here we show when and how the surface roughness promotes the destabilization of a moving contact line on a hydrophilic surface. Beyond the balance of the driving force and viscous resistance where a stable wetting interface is sustained, wetting failure occurs and is modified by the ...
